How to Wear White Denim in the Fall

For years we’ve been told don’t wear white after Labor Day. We typically think of white denim as a summer staple and then we put it away for fall. Yet in recent years there have been way more visuals to help us embrace the idea.

If you live in a warm climate, I know this is NOT a novel idea to you and it will seem like second nature. But in the Northwest and the land of rain, it’s a little less practical for us. I’m always up for a challenge, so here we go.

It’s likely you’ve started transitioning into fall colors. For fun, try pairing some of them with white and see what you think. Take advantage of every fall sunny day we get, and break out the white denim as much as possible. You may have some combos you like better than others and that’s OK!

I started on Labor Day weekend. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have caught this one. The top is navy/dark green with just a small white dot that made it work. I also added a necklace that had some white that pulls it together. This way you don’t feel like it’s all dark on the top with a stark contrast on the bottom.

(I wanted to show the outfit full length, but I look like a dwarf in this picture in comparison to the windmill and hanging baskets! This is taken in my hometown of Lynden, Washington where they have most beautiful, and largest baskets I’ve ever seen)

As the month went on, I added some fall colors. First view is currently at the Cabi outlet and I believe I saw the orange sweater there too recently. (If you have an outlet near you, you can call and describe the item to see if they have it and your size before making the trip to the store.)

If these warm colors aren’t your thing and you just prefer neutrals, I really like gray OR any lighter neutral (blush, taupe) with white denim too! I plan to try more of that. The boots are gray but look black in the photo. I think the lighter ones in the above photos are better with white.

This top and sweater (last year’s Cabi and available at the outlet store) never looked great with any pair of dress pants last fall when I was still working at a store with a dress code. I rarely wore this. I tried them with white which is fine. I am going to keep playing around with it and see if a lighter wash denim will be better.

I had a meeting Downtown Portland today so I popped into Nordstrom to see if I could find something great to put with white. I found this sweater by Madewell. It’s just a mediocre outfit to me–didn’t love. Liked the sweater though! Size down–I have on a Medium and it felt and looked big. Comes in other great colors too.

Do you have a great fall/white denim combination?

While not everything is available that I photographed, you can shop the looks with a few of these links: Madewell denim//Earth Boots//Stella & Dot Necklace// Earrings//Silver pendant (probably my favorite piece right now)

Thanks for following along everyone and for referring your friends. I love your feedback. One reader told me she liked my “try-on” session photos. It’s not always my favorite thing to do, but I know it is way more helpful when you can so combinations put together. So thank you for the comment and I will keep doing it occasionally.
