How to Transition your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

The first day of Fall hits tomorrow. Here in the Pacific Northwest, fall is one of our favorite seasons. September can be a very sunny and warm month. Yet, fall is definitely in the air with colder mornings and cooler evenings.

I spent some time in my closet today getting ready for fall. I left my wool and cashmere in the garment bags and plastic for now. I refer to this category as “extreme seasonal” meaning wool in the winter and sundresses in the summer.

Fortunately my closet is big enough (yet not massive) so I can simply move around some clothes, and it doesn’t take me a lot of time. It also helps to do a little here and there.

First I determine what is multi-seasonal. We all have pieces that can be worn nearly year round. They stay put in my rotation for fall and possibly winter. Next, I moved some brighter very summery and springy things into a top corner. I also grouped together jackets that were not multi-seasonal and took those out of the rotation for the season.

Here are some tips to help you transition into fall fashion.

1. Incorporate darker colors now.

Think of the colors of fall leaves. While those colors tend to favor the warm side of the color wheel, there are reds, shoes of purple at burgundy that tend to be cooler. These rich colors are perfect with white or cream denim. Don’t put the light colored bottoms away quite yet. You may remember this photo from my post on animal prints.

Check out that post for all the sources of what I’m wearing.

2. Layer!

Group together your jackets and sweaters that are neutral and multi-seasonal and layer over your sleeveless tops or dresses.

Here is a photo of “summer” dress paired with a leather jacket. I wore this dress so much the last two summers that I grew a little tired of it. I didn’t pull it out this summer and now I thought it was the perfect piece to incorporate with a leather jacket. For the sake of time, I chose this mule with a heel, but I could easily wear tights and a short boot.

Scan your closet for any dresses that could work with a leather or denim jacket. This will help you wear those pieces in the cooler mornings and evenings.

Maggy London Dress Never in a million years did I think I’d find this dress, but many time Amazon will have styles from a year or two back!

Lightweight jackets are one of my staples and especially love them in the fall. Many of you bought the camo jacket I suggested from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. That sold out, but here is another one you might like from Kut from the Kloth. (I’m wearing a medium so I’d say it runs a little large) It’s on sale, so grab this one before it also sells out!

Recently a reader asked about what to wear with the camo jacket. I’m multi-tasking in this post to answer that question. Any bright color (coral, red) will work well. I even like burgundy. Any neutral: White, gray, cream, black. Here I put it with a very old mustard colored sweater that I’ve been hanging onto for some reason. I like this combo.

3. Shoe Switch

It’s time to put away the summery sandals and flip flops. If you have something perforated, or peep toe, now is the perfect time to wear this before the rain hits. I actually wear #4 nearly year round.
