Denim Trends: Distressing and Unfinished Hems

If you’ve been keeping up on denim trends you may have noticed the unfinished hem that has been popular the last year or two. Distressed denim has been around a few years long. Some women can’t handle the idea of paying for denim that is cut to shreds or has openings at the knee (far right)

I always tell my clients pick/choose your trends. You don’t have to embrace every one of them.

Frequently women will “generalize” and claim a trend is inappropriate for their age group.

Let’s start with distressed denim. Depending on your personal style, taste and maybe even age, you will filter the trend to work for you. I think that is one of the most common questions in my years in the business. Is this age appropriate?

I have found it helpful to use the example of this denim trend to explain. For example, women over 45-50 (and I’m just picking a number) CAN wear distressed denim. You might feel more comfortable in something with slight distressing like the photo on the far left–small doses to start. Certainly have fun with it and try a pair that has more if you like the trend.

I always say that each age group can take a certain trend and wear it well, but it will look completely different. Someone in their thirties will pair and PRESENT it differently than a woman in her sixties. There are no rules on the tag that say “for women under 40”!

Personally I like a little distressing; I think it adds interest especially when you wear a lot of dark colors on top. I like the contrast.

I actually really like some of the unfinished and uneven hems. I have a pair and like it cuffed and will show that in upcoming posts. What do you think? What do you like and do you have something similar in your closet?
