What are the Fall Trends for 2018

It’s that time! Fall trends are making their way into the stores. It’s time to evaluate what you have and what you need for fall and winter. I’ll be doing a series on this all week. Be sure and subscribe so you will receive all updates in your inbox!

In preparation for a television segment on Portland Today which will air today, I’ve been busy coordinating fall styles.

First, let’s discuss what is in this year. Remember. Find 1-2 trends to try. You don’t have to embrace every trend, but do try to step out of your box and try something new!

DENIM

1. Higher Waists

2. A little less deconstruction (holes and open knees)

3. Frayed, unfinished hems, step hems, splits hems, and lots of details (grommets, studs etc)

4. Skinnies still dominate, but straight cuts are more prevalent this year too.

I’m a big fan of the higher waist. It was always around, but now it is MUCH easier to find. I always recommend reading the descriptions carefully. Know what rise works on you. Typically anything above a 9 inch rise is pretty high on most women.

Last year I tried the unfinished hems. This year I’m look for the right pair of gray denim, and I’m ready to try one of the detailed styles or a step or split hem.

The Good American label has extended sizes from 00-24. I love that.

TOPS

Last season we really saw tops get a bit shorter. Twists and ties entered the picture. It doesn’t mean your longer tops are out. I would mix it up a bit though. Try tying a knot to add some detail and symmetry. Do the tuck–side or front tuck.

The Romantic style is alive and well with tops and dresses. Lots of florals! Instead of just seeing a long bell sleeve, now there are all lengths to choose from. Flutter sleeves, bubble and balloon sleeves are all popular.

I like the black short sleeve bell sleeve by Stella and Dot. It’s perfect. It feels like a tee but the bell sleeve gives it that something extra. It’s very flattering for the upper arm. LOVE.THIS.TOP

SNEAKERS AND MULES

I really promoted sneakers in my dress it down post and during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. Throughout this week, I’ll highlight what I think should be a fall go-to. I think this is a “must have” style if you haven’t already jumped on board. I’d say the same thing for mules which of course may be more practical in the fall with our Portland weather.

As far as sneakers, there are both slip-on styles and lace-up. It may take a while to transition to this look, but I know once you do, you will like it!

Vince//Pikolinos//

The key when you are transitioning is to find a style that is a little dressier. I like the Vince style shown above for that reason. It comes in a number of different prints that would even work with a bottom beyond denim.

By the way, Pikolinos is one of my favorite “comfort” brands and Zappos has a really wide selection. Recently I helped a client with shoes for her vacation. The Earth selections we looked at earlier in the spring were no longer available. Zappos had them all! When you are looking for something from a past season, Amazon and Zappos have both been helpful.

ANIMAL PRINTS

New trend? Not really. Animal prints are a classic and not going anywhere. However, we are seeing smaller more subtle prints that may be more up your alley if you have not been an animal print fan in the past. Here is an example of what I’m referring to with two different examples of prints in the shoes.
