Leggings, Jeggings and Skinny Jeans

I have to admit that when I saw the trend of tucking my jeans in boots I never thought I’d be able to pull off that look with my short legs. Then came leggings! I laughed and vowed I’d never wear them. I was pregnant with my children in the early ’90s when leggings were very fashionable. I wore them and stirrup pants in every color with big sweaters.(sorry, no photo!) This timely trend was perfect for me as I never had to purchase real maternity clothes. I just couldn’t go there again.

I do love to try a new trend. All the fashion forecasting says leggings are here to stay. I tried a few pairs reminiscent of the old days–you know the thinner fabric that hugs every piece of your leg? NOT for me. I also knew that I would feel more comfortable with a longer coat or sweater to cover my thighs. I found Kenneth Cole leggings for $49 and another pair at Lily Atelier. The thicker fabric convinced me I could wear leggings again. I added long sweaters/coats that have shape. I stepped out of my comfort zone! I loved the look.

Next on the list. Would there really be a skinny jean that fit me? I am going to be totally honest and admit there were some I could barely get on. Some made my thighs look even larger. I really loved a pair from Paige Premium Denim. This seemed a little out of my price range at $179 so I kept looking. Lily Atelier had a brand called DISH that fit the bill. The fabric was amazing. The lightweight denim was comfortable and not skin tight. You could almost describe this as a JEGGING–the top is like a regular pair of jeans with waistband and zipper and a narrow tight leg like leggings. CABI also has a Jegging and knit jean in their spring catalog. Oh and for the record, the Paige jeans are now marked down. Patience is always key!

Here is my advice: If height is in your favor or you are willing to wear a heel, leggings/skinny jeans and boots will work  for many of you with a longer piece on top. When you carry your weight in your hips and thighs and are under 5’4 this is going to be a little more difficult. If you want to try leggings and skinny jeans my recommendation is you start with a straight cut jeans or pants and see how you feel with this style before proceeding. It will help you transition to the next step. Here is a photo of me in a straight cut. The brand is Not Your Daughter’s Jeans: The Nordstrom Rack for 24.99. They are also available at most major department stores.

I realize that in many parts of the country you are having spring weather. Typically we have very rainy springs in the NW and I planned my posts accordingly-thinking that I might be wearing boots through March. The following pictures of sweaters, coats, leggings may not be seasonal for many, but you will be a jump ahead for next fall. The pictures below are with the “jeggings” and black leggings. Boots are from Nordstrom Rack.

I like a “slouch” boot with this look. Boots: Naughty Monkey are still available at Nordstrom.

Below Christine shows yet a different look. Jeans: Citizen, Boots: Michael Kors,Jacket: Forever 21. I love your style Christine! Thanks for sharing.
