Classy Coats

I love coats! Now, I’ve always liked a nice jacket. You’ve heard me say a number of times that a jacket is a woman’s “best friend” because they cover the 3 main flaws we complain about: arms, middle and hips.  However, while lightweight jackets are a nice addition to your wardrobe, they don’t always keep you warm enough through the colder weather.

Last winter I was walking through Nordstrom and a coat on the sale rack caught my eye. It was a Michael Kors in the best color of chocolate ever. It was a wool blend and not too heavy. I look for lots of seams, and it had an incredibly flattering fit. It was comfortable and easy to move in. The best part was that it wasn’t too long–came right above the knee. I love this coat. This started my new obsession.

A couple of months later I found a great winter white in cotton at The Rack and then a tweed model from the Cabi outlet. I’ve featured all these photos before, but I cropped them so you could see details and fabric a little more clearly.

Now is the BEST time of the year to find a coat. You will find some that are kind of a cross between a jacket and a coat—those you could leave on depending on the fabric and style. (the teal one is a good example of that) Others are just worn to be an “overcoat” and clearly you would take them off . My favorite blend is wool, nylon and CASHMERE. I have two coats with this exact blend and it seems to be a great mix. The fabric is smooth and doesn’t feel too stiff.

The cuts on  most coats now are extremely flattering. Long gone are the big bulky coats of years past that added pounds physically and visually.

I went back to see if that same Michael Kors coat was available this year in a different color. They changed the cut a bit which was fine with me. (I don’t like two things in my closet that are exactly alike) However, when I tried it on I was TWO sizes larger than my coat from last year. Just another point where size means nothing sometimes! I haven’t purchased a thing yet, but here are some of my favorites on sale right now at Nordstrom. I’ve tried on several of these, and while the  photos don’t show all views, they were very flattering in the back with lots of seams!

At Nordstrom and other online stores you will find many when searching  women’s wool blend coats. Some of my favorite brands are Kristen Blake, Ellen Tracey, George Simonton and Miss Sixty. Guess and Calvin Klein also had some nice options.

So, is it just me or do many of you find yourself drawn to great coats like this? If you are a Style by Karen Fan on Facebook, check out the great boots now on sale that will look amazing with any of these coats.
