Wardrobe Staple: Utility Jacket

I’ve never been one of those bloggers to write about the “FIVE TOP WARDROBE STAPLES EVERY WOMAN NEEDS”. I know you’ve seen a bunch of articles like that. Usually they include a white blouse, denim jacket, a black blazer, and so on. Here’s why I’m always hesitant to write that article. Two words: PERSONAL STYLE or what I like to pinpoint even more is STYLE PERSONA. As a stylist, I listen very carefully to your answers to key questions when we work together. I find out very quickly what style of “third piece” you are going to be comfortable in. Some women are just more comfortable in a cardigan. Others just a top/bottom and outerwear.

But the majority like a third piece and the one I’d recommend that will work with almost everyone is a Utility Jacket. In fact, I’m going to go as far to say it’s a wardrobe staple because if jackets feel confining (and they do to lots of women) you can find a looser comfortable style than can even be more comfortable than a denim jacket. You’ll see them referred to as chore jackets or field jackets at some stores.

First let’s start with a sleeveless utility jacket aka vest. I’ve had it for years and as you know from reading here, I can grow tired of things I’ve worn a lot. It’s been beautiful fall weather so it was time to give it a new look. My favorite combination was a black sleeveless top and black short skirt (column of color). If you followed the last years, you’ve probably seen me in this outfit! It was time for some new earrings and bracelets that gave it a new life.

Next I tried this striped top and off-white denim. All I could think was–why I haven’t I done this before?

Then I switched gears. Yes, we actually went out for Happy Hour and I took this jacket in case it cooled off. The jacket is by Madewell and I’ve been very pleased with it. It also comes a lighter color if olive isn’t your thing. Below I created a widget with similar options. My jacket is heavier and may appear a little stiff to some. When choosing a utility jacket check the fabrication carefully and read reviews. Some are going to be more of a relaxed style –even a little oversized if you prefer that look.
