Summer Fashion: Choosing Sunglasses

My Summer Series continues with tips on finding the perfect pair of sunglasses.  Do you tend to lose sunglasses easily and just buy inexpensive brands, or spend a little more and keep them for several years? Do you purchase one pair at a time or do you trade off between several pairs?

I tend to wear the same pair over and over until they wear out, go out of style or I lose them (which typically doesn’t happen to me)

When I was at Nordstrom they implemented the “Price Matching” policy. I got a little spoiled. In addition to price matching another retailer which was typically 25% off, I received my employee discount.

Customers would always say… “Do you spend most of your paycheck?” Typically I said NO because quite honestly, you tire of seeing the same clothes. So I was very choosy. Working there also helped me make good decisions. I could put it on hold for 24 hours and think about it. Many things went back on the rack.

But then there was this a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses…They were price matched and I splurged. I carefully kept them in their case in my handbag. I tried not to wear them on the top of my head. A few years later, I still wear them all the time. A year ago I found a similar shape from Kate Spade at Nordstrom Rack (a great place to shop for sunglasses by the way). I saved them, knowing that one day I’d want to alternate between both to lessen the wear on my favorites.

Tom Ford: (they retail for over $400 but of course I did not pay that.)

I liked the Penelope shown below. I think it is the closest shape to the pair I’m wearing. Watch for Tom Ford styles to be price matched at Nordstrom!

Kate Spade $49.97. My find from The Rack. Current Kate Spade styles run about half of the price of Tom Ford.

How do you choose the best pair for your face shape? Dozens of articles have been written but I tend to I follow these two rules.

1. I try on a pair I’m drawn to by color or shape and I try them on BEFORE I look in the mirror. I know the comfort level the minute I put them on. If they don’t feel good, I don’t even look in the mirror. Comfort is a top priority.

2. After I evaluate comfort, I will take a peek in the mirror. It must fit my face and provide some balance. Study the above article if you’re puzzled, but overall I think you are drawn to the right shape.

This Aviator frame is not wide enough for my face. It doesn’t feel right either. (I will mention that these from Stella & Dot seem to look great on everyone but me!) The 2nd one I like a lot better, but too wide. Super comfortable, but I don’t love . (All photos are linked)

By the way, Aviators never really lose their popularity, and tend to flatter most face shapes.

Here is an example of a great shape and size, but I felt the frame itself looked too “heavy” and dark.

I tried Gucci, Prada and Burberry and still went back to the comfort, sizes and shapes by Tom Ford. These were super light weight and felt great on. Yet, maybe a little too round? The open temple style below is not me at all.

Trying on hats (coming in the next post) and sunglasses with sensors does nothing for my hair style I might add!

Last pair, Kate Spade. I actually really liked these!

I checked Saks Off Fifth. Lots of sunglasses there for sure. Pretty inexpensive, but nothing really said. “Take me home!”

Stella & Dot has a very affordable line of sunglasses. I like the Casey and Parker styles.

After all that, I think I like what I have and decided to stick with it.

Coming up next more sunglasses including Maui Jim and HATS!
