Simple Tips to Find Flattering Shorts

The weather has been super warm –like nearly 100 in Portland this past week. That’s not typical for June. I actually wore a pair of shorts this week, and thought maybe some of you locally or in other parts of the of the country might be ready to break out the shorts.

But wait, perhaps you are like me and haven’t worn shorts regularly in years. Yes, it wasn’t until last year that I found a pair of shorts I liked. I preferred casual dresses or skirts. They just seemed to be much more comfortable. Then I found Wit & Wisdom. This is a Nordstrom brand. When I started working there in 2011, we had a some Wit and Wisdom jeans in the Point of View department. The line has expanded considerably since then.

First, let’s talk about shorts and length. I’m not going to say that one length is more age appropriate than another. I think you know the length you are most comfortable with. I call it finding the “sweet spot”.

I have short legs so a Bermuda style short that comes just above the knee is just not the right look. I think a longer short on someone taller with longer legs is a smart choice. I study the descriptions thoroughly to find my “sweet spot” which is about an 8-9 inch inseam. 5-6 inches is just too short for me personally. I like a style that gives the option to be rolled/unrolled to give those various options. Below I’m wearing the medium wash from Wit & Wisdom.

NOTE: End shorts on a narrower point of your thigh when choosing something that is above the knee. The hemline (a horizontal line ) is always more flattering on a narrower point of the leg.

This year the choices have expanded even more with different styles, denim washes and even extended sizes too! This brand has also added their signature “Ab-solution” waistband which is amazing.  Take a peek at this link for the search I did for Wit and Wisdom shorts.

SOME CONSIDERATIONS WHEN SHOPPING FOR SHORTS ONLINE

  1. As I mentioned, the inseam is extremely important for the right fit (get out a tape measure and see where the various inseams are going to hit you, or measure a pair of shorts you wear right now.)
  2. I prefer a little bit of higher rise but not too high. Again, personal preference and body type dictate this guideline.
  3. Leg opening measurement is worth looking at too. This may take some trial/error and trying some different ones. If the leg opening is too narrow–well that’s just not a flattering look when the shorts are so tight on the thigh. Conversely, too wide of a leg opening could look a little matronly as one review I read described it.

JAG SHORTS as well as KUT FROM THE KLOTH (shorter inseams) could be some more options for you.

All are really affordable! Still prefer skirts or dresses over shorts? Then don’t press the matter and enjoy wearing what looks the most flattering on you.
