How to Choose the Right Outerwear

To finish up the topic on choosing outerwear, I thought I’d sum it all up with photos and links to some coats you may like.

I’m definitely writing/showing to a variety of climates. Here in the Northwest, we get a fairly wide range in temperature. We can get wind, snow and ice. Other years are more temperate and it just rains.

Coat fashion doesn’t change as quickly and I have a hunch if you are like me, you’ve had some coats for a number of years.

Here is my coat collection from lightest to heaviest:

coat capsule

1. North Face: These have been around for years for both men, women and kids. It’s the light wind breaker type piece that is more casual. You can layer nicely underneath as well.

2. Cole Haan packable rain coat. Just stuff it into the small bag that it comes with which makes it great for travel.

3. Cabi (old) Raincoat I like this because it is oversized and you can really add it to several layers.

4. Barbour all purpose coat. I like to say this is my “in between” coat. I photographed it without the hood and tried to show the inside piece. I’ve featured it numerous times.

5. Burberry Raincoat with removable hood and liner. They stopped making this A-line style which is a shame. It even works over my heaviest “3rd piece”.

6. Eddie Bauer packable puffer. I found this at Costco for 39.99. I also have a longer puffer coat from Bernardo (not pictured) These are not the heavy down coats needed in colder parts of the country, but they are surprisingly warm and way more slim cut and streamlined than in the past. I’ve shown several below.

WOOL COATS

–Red Wool was a clearance find at Nordstrom Rack– oh in about 2010. It’s still one of my favorites. Unfortunately the photo doesn’t show it well.

–Camel  Trench (It’s a Burberry and one of my best sale finds EVER)

–J Crew light weight topper from the Anniversary Sale. Not as heavy as my wool coats, it is a nice option.

Last weekend I was visiting my cousin in Montana who graciously agreed to model for me. We wanted to show a couple pattern/tweed options in addition to the red Fleurette which she says is her favorite.

What About Scarves?

It seemed the right time to answer this frequent question. Are scarves still on trend? I don’t think we are seeing as many of the light weight fashion scarves with sweaters and tops in years past. Last year we saw smaller neck scarves–a flashback to the seventies. I did a take off on that in today’s Instagram photo.

I can’t imagine not wearing a scarf with certain coats for warmth. Although we don’t get the cold temps for months like many parts of the U.S, it’s a very damp cold here, and sometimes I just like a scarf! Many women like to cover their neck and I’m kinda feeling that way myself lately. So I can’t really say get rid of your scarves especially if you live in a cold where it can be bitter cold!

I have a few that are specifically coat scarves. (I would tie them differently and was admittedly a little sloppy in some of the photos) Then there are still a bunch of fashion scarves that I will probably wear more with coats than as part of an outfit. That’s my take on scarves!

Shopping

Below you can scroll through to see if something catches your eye. Although I couldn’t find exact styles, I looked for similar styles in each category above so you can start building your capsule.

Since this is Black Friday WEEK (I guess that’s what we are calling it now) make sure to click “get sale alert” so you will get notified when things go on sale OR come back to this post and click on the links. Thursday many sites will reduce prices or add extra savings. Also, if you click on link it will take you to the site where there may be a special going on that doesn’t show here (for example the J Crew cocoon coat). If I find a MUST HAVE coat later this week I will be sure to highlight it.
