Best Tips for Shopping the Sales

It’s that time of year everyone! The markdowns have already started everywhere. Each year it gets a little earlier. Remember when the sales started on Black Friday? Now it’s a couple weeks before. It’s all great for us, but it can be overwhelming, and it is easy to get carried away purchasing things you don’t really need.

Fall weather has set in for whatever that means for the area of the country you live. Winter is just around the corner. Now you have a pretty good idea of what you are wearing and where there are needs. I always refer to that as gaps in the wardrobe. Do a quick wardrobe evaluation before you shop. Here are some points to think of as you make your list.

–If an item finds it’s way to your laundry or dry cleaning pile often it probably would be a good idea to have more than one. In other words, if you are reaching for something consistently and it’s in the laundry, it’s a good idea to have several.

–When something I love  is starting to show wear it is defined as a “workhorse” piece in my closet; I often start to look for something similar so I can spread the wear.

It’s Coat Time. Make sure you have all your categories covered–wool coat, raincoat, puffer. If you dress for work, blazers, toppers, blouses staples.

–Boots: Rain, Snow, or high fashion are all on sale!

— It’s Sweater Weather! We had a cold spell a few weeks ago and I was freezing. If you need a little warmth and like to layer, I’d definitely check out this category.

–Denim! I wear jeans almost every single day so I’m always looking. I like to rotate. My favorite pair is starting to show wear. I didn’t follow my own advice.  I recall having the chance to add an extra pair when they came on sale and now they are long gone.

I tried to cover just about every category in this widget which lets you scroll through quickly versus showing photo after photo and links in a post. I even started thinking ahead to some gift ideas and some accessories that could dress up an outfit for a holiday look.

I don’t know what Nordstrom will do for Black Friday this year, but keep your receipt and it’s always worth asking for a price adjustment. (no guarantees. Rules have changed since I worked there!) If you love something, I’d grab it. Sizes sell out fast this time of year!
