Best Tips for Online Shopping

Last week I wrote a post asking for some feedback and questions. I received some good suggestions. Thank you and please keep them coming. Online shopping is definitely the wave of the future. Many women become frustrated when time after time things don’t work and they are constantly returning boxes to the UPS store or Post office.

I have shopped online for years. It started about the same time as my foot problems. I can’t buy shoes in the store. They could feel fine there, and be troublesome when I get home. I have to walk around in them a couple days to know for sure. Zappos is the absolute best for shoe shopping and I appreciate their fast shipping. Nordstrom is a close second.

How can you be a successful online shopper?

1. READ DESCRIPTIONS:

Most sites specify fabrics, measurements. If you are not sure about fabrication, take a look at what is hanging in your closet presently. What fabrics work and drape well on you. What has worked in the past? Then try to duplicate it.

2. KNOW YOUR BRAND NAMES:

You will start seeing patterns between brands both in sizing and quality. Of course there will always be discrepancies, but you soon learn what is consistent.

3. KEY MEASUREMENTS:

Length of the garment. Most models on all the sites are very tall. Don’t judge an item by the photo of the model. Look at the dimensions listed and measure where it will fall on you.

-Leg opening is an overlooked measurement when buying denim. It is super important to pay attention to this when looking at a skinny cut of jeans. I swear I’ve tried really narrow leg openings and it affects the overall fit.

-Rise is also a key measurement

Speaking of measurements, most sites have guidelines on fit. I think many would say this can be inconsistent. Debating about size? Buy two sizes. It’s worth it.

4. READ THE REVIEWS:

While there likely will be varying opinions, it certainly will give some ideas on fit and overall quality. I noticed many of them really talk about the fabric and how it feels. Sometimes they will even note if the fabric is thin and flimsy –something you can’t see in online photos. As you can see below, there are opposite reviews on the same item. I really look at what they are noting specifically and if it is fit and quality not just personal style. We all know how much that varies so we can’t always consider that. Some review are very detailed, other short and sweet.

5. KNOW YOUR SHIPPING AND RETURN POLICIES:

Make sure you have FREE shipping both ways. (Personally, I don’t shop from sites that don’t.) If you are an Amazon shopper, watch this carefully. Many items will have a deadline on the return date.

Some stores now have a “buy online and pick up in store” option. This is so easy as the pick-up areas are often right by the door. You can scoot in and out fast. Nordstrom also has curbside pick-up. (You just need to call when you are on your way) They even have reserve in store before you buy. This allows you to quickly try something on before charging your card. You can put in your zip code and the site saves this info.

I buy more online than I ever have. Amazon has changed that for many of us I think. Many retailers include a label or make it really easy to print. There are numerous UPS stores and you just drop and go. USPS also have convenient drop boxes.

The bottom line? It’s still a gamble, but one worth taking I believe. There is some trial and error. Online shopping will work for you if you have the right mindset–if it doesn’t work I can return. Maybe at first only 50% or less will work, but this percentage will climb as you become a more savvy online shopper.

As I recommend things to you, I will continue to highlight fit tips in each description.

If you are an online shopper or even if you aren’t, I’d love to hear your comments. I know I have forgotten things so please chime in with your experiences.
